This is our 100th published blog post!

And we are almost at 20,000 page views!

Wow, those are both great milestones to have achieved in a relatively short amount of time.

We are back in!

All building works identified in the detailed structural assessment of Te Kete Wānanga (the Whitireia Learning Centre (Library) have now been completed.

Along with the work that was required to be carried out as a result of the assessment, we also took the opportunity to replace the carpet throughout the building and purchase new shelving and have this installed. The new carpet is down and the shelving is in. So, we are pleased to advise that we are now in a position to re-open Te Kete Wananga on Monday 27 March.

It is important to note, that when the building does re-open on Monday, study spaces will be available as will computers and staff but, books will not. We are working on getting the books back in and set-up on the new shelving but this is a big task and will be completed as soon as possible.

From Selector

We thank you for your patience while this work has been carried out; we look forward to welcoming you all back into this fabulous study space on Monday.

Welcome to 2017 at Whitireia Library

Whitireia library services update

The earthquake on 14 November affected our Porirua campus library building and it remains closed as a precautionary measure. The date of the reopening of the library building will be dependent on the structural engineers report.
In the meantime, library and support services are being provided as follows:
  • The Student Hub is open with the student help desk and a librarian present at all times. Library services will operate from the Student Hub on Monday to Thursday 8am-8pm and Friday 8am-5pm. There will be no library services available at the Student Hub on Saturday mornings at this stage.
  • Porirua Public Library from 14 February. One library staff and one learning advisor will be available between 10am-3pm daily (except Saturday and Sunday). Study spaces will be available at the Porirua Public Library.
  • Students have direct access to any of the WelTec libraries for resources and support.  We do encourage students to use the WelTec library closest to them. Libraries are situated at the following locations: Petone campus, 21 Kensington Avenue, Petone; Wellington CBD campus, 11-17 Church Street, Wellington; School of Hospitality, 52 Cuba Street, Wellington.
  • From 14 February student support staff will be based in Ako Ake Café which is open from 7.30am-11pm, Monday-Friday.
  • Student support staff will also be based in the Learning Street, Wikitoria Katene building, 10am- 3pm daily.
  • A designated quiet room is available in the atrium, next to the Health Centre.
  • E101 is available for after-hours swipe access: 5pm–11pm Monday to Friday, 6am-6pm weekends. E101 and E102 are open for student study on weekdays 6am-5pm except when booked for a class.  The room must be vacated when a class is on unless you have the permission of the tutor to remain.
All Whitireia Porirua books and journals are in-accessible; e-resources are available.
If print material is required, staff will order this from one of our other campus libraries, SMART libraries (including WelTec) or via inter library loan.
Please check www.whitireia.ac.nz for updates

Student success demonstrated in styling

At the end of last term, students on the Whitireia Beauty and Hairdressing programmes participated in class competitions to create a full styling image on models of their choice. The competitions took place on Wednesday 29 June at the Kāpiti Campus and Friday 1 July at the Porirua campus.

This was the students’ first time putting together a complete style, which required them to create the hair, make-up, and the clothing look on their model.  Whitireia Hairdressing tutor Jolie Gunson said the students learned a good deal throughout the exercise.

‘They were pushed and felt stressed but they performed, came through, and really had a great time. They were deservedly very proud of what they achieved,’ said Jolie.

The top five students from each campus will go on to represent Whitireia in the Regional Hairdressing Competitions in September, where they will compete with other ‘next generation’ hairdressers with under four years’ experience.
