Library and etexting
Next semester, the library is planning to begin an etexting service. The service is now in place thanks to support from Julie Ainsworth of Business Development. Its introduction is based on the wide use of cell-phones and the high return rate of student emails. A publicity campaign will encourage users to text the library not only for renewals but for other information such as opening hours and brief reference queries.
Wireless Access in the Library
In an innovative project, technology students under the supervision of Steve Cosgrove, will this week begin a Wireless Site Survey in Te Kete Wānanga. The survey will test the feasibility of wireless access in the building and provide CafeNet access to users for a short period of time.
Electronic books on a variety of subjects are being included in the library catalogue. These are part of the Gale database and titles added so far are: The encyclopedia of sociology, The Gale encyclopedia of psychology, The Gale encyclopedia of medicine, Drugs and controlled substances information for students and The Gale encyclopedia of genetic disorders. URLS are included in all the records.
Friday, June 02, 2006
On Friday, May 26, 2006, Whitireia Community Polytechnic celebrated its 20th anniversary with a cocktail party in Te Kete Wānanga, the Learning Centre and library. Bookstacks in the library were wrapped in white sheeting and transformed into christo-esque installations, circulation desks became bars and study spaces became venues for Polynesian song and dance. Normal library food and drink rules were suspended as over 500 guests sampled spit-roasted pigs, fresh fish civiche (Island style) and New Zealand wines.
