At the end of last term, students on the Whitireia Beauty and Hairdressing programmes participated in class competitions to create a full styling image on models of their choice. The competitions took place on Wednesday 29 June at the Kāpiti Campus and Friday 1 July at the Porirua campus.
This was the students’ first time putting together a complete style, which required them to create the hair, make-up, and the clothing look on their model. Whitireia Hairdressing tutor Jolie Gunson said the students learned a good deal throughout the exercise.

‘They were pushed and felt stressed but they performed, came through, and really had a great time. They were deservedly very proud of what they achieved,’ said Jolie.
The top five students from each campus will go on to represent Whitireia in the Regional Hairdressing Competitions in September, where they will compete with other ‘next generation’ hairdressers with under four years’ experience.

‘I must say a huge thank you to our industry judges: Alana from Lifestyles, Hayley from Jomp (Kapiti), Megan from Glo and Tracy from Hair by the Sea (Porirua). Thanks also go to our Whitireia colleagues Destina Munro, for the amazing photography, and Helen Johnston, for judging at the Porirua event,’ said Jolie.
